Letter to the Editor of the Rutland Herald about Barack Obama and Marriage Equality (gay marriage)

To the Editor,

Today I received a call from the Barack Obama campaign asking for my support. When I asked about Obama’s position on equality for gays and lesbians, I was directed to a statement on his website concerning his position on marriage equality. This statement upset me because it made clear that Barack Obama believes in discrimination. So I called back his campaign and read them Obama’s own words, however I substituted the word “black” for gay and substituted the word “white” for straight/traditional. This change of a few words made it blatantly obvious that Obama’s position on marriage equality is simply wrong. If you support marriage equality, I encourage you to call the Obama campign and read them Obama’s position on marriage equality with black substituted for gay:

“I believe civil unions should include the same legal rights that accompany a marriage license. I support the notion that all people – black or white – deserve the same rights and responsibilities to assist their loved ones in times of emergency, deserve equal health insurance and other employment benefits currently extended to white married couples, and deserve the same property rights as anyone else.

“However, I do not support black marriage. Marriage has religious and social connotations, and I consider marriage to be between a white and a white. If I was President, however, I would oppose any effort to stifle a state’s ability to decide this question on its own. Whether it was a Constitutional amendment banning black marriage or a bill like the Defense of Marriage Act, I would oppose such efforts. I think the President should do all he or she can to advance strong families. Whatever the make-up of the family, it is the President’s role to provide policies and leadership that enable the family to thrive.”

I say, “Yes we can” change Obama’s position on this important issue.

John honored at TNC Volunteer Dinner

On Saturday, September 16th, John was given an award for volunteering the most hours of any volunteer in the last year by The Nature Conservancy's Southern Lake Champlain office. He volunteered 187 hours filming and producing DVDs of the events.

There are some who say Dick Cheney is right to want to have sex with a six-year-old boy. To them I say, you're wrong.

Now, sure, I don't know for a fact that Dick Cheney wants to have sex with a six-year-old boy, but I also don't know for a fact that he doesn't, or hasn't. But judging by what Cheney just said today about Democrats, and what Patricia Wilson of Reuters reported as apparent truth, Cheney being a practicing pedophile is just as true as what Cheney or Wilson allege. Here's what Dick had to say:

"Some in our own country claim retreat from Iraq would satisfy the appetite of the terrorists and get them to leave us alone," Cheney told a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Reno, Nevada. "A precipitous withdrawal from Iraq would be ... a ruinous blow to the future security of the United States."

And America's own Pravda, also known as Reuters, in the shape of "reporter" Patricia Wilson, simply quotes Cheney's words as though anyone in America, other than Mohammad Atta, has ever said anything about needing to "satisfy the appetite of the terrorists." Cheney has entered the land of the delusional, and Reuters the land of FOX News.

But Patricia Wilson of Reuters couldn't just leave it at that. No.

Her next paragraph, as inartful as she could make it, suggests that Democrats actually have said that we should appease terrorists:

Cheney did not use the word "Democrats," choosing instead the anonymous "some," but he rejected the argument many have made that by invading Iraq in March 2003, the United States simply "stirred up a hornets' nest."

Now Wilson and Reuters will claim that this previous paragraph really refers to the NEXT paragraph that follows. Well guess what Sherlock? You never bothered mentioning anything about how no one has ever suggested that we need to appease the appetite of the terrorists, so your reader is going to assume that you meant the Democrats.

Seriously, you people call yourself journalists? And you wonder why your credibility keeps dropping.

Do your damn job.

CLINTON, GORE, AND BUSH FACE FIRING SQUAD

Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and George W. Bush were set to face a firing squad in a small Central American country. Bill Clinton was the first one placed against the wall and just before the order was given he yelled out, "Earthquake!" The firing squad fell into a panic and Bill jumped over the wall and escaped in the confusion.

Al Gore was the second one placed against the wall. The squad was reassembled and Al pondered what he had just witnessed.

Again before the order was given Al yelled out, "Tornado!" Again the squad fell apart and Al slipped over the wall.

The last person, George W. Bush, was placed against the wall. He was thinking, "I see the pattern here, just scream out something about a disaster and hop over the wall." He confidently refused the blindfold as the firing squad was reassembled. As the rifles were raised in his direction he grinned from ear to ear and yelled, "Fire!"

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the
scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying,
and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where
the road was leading them....
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of
the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill it was broken by
a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he
saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like Mother of Pearl, and the
street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.
He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man
at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me,
where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right
up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler
asked.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and
continued the way he had been going with his dog.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to
a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been
closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside,
leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there".
The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate.
"Come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump." They went through the gate, and
sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.
The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave
some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the
man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.
"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.
This is Heaven," the man answered.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said
that was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope.
That's Hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they
screen out the folks who'll leave their best friends behind."

Vermont Reception Planned

Due to LOTS of requests from friends and family who could not make it to our wedding, we are having a post-honeymoon reception in Vermont.

This Saturday, the 17th of September, at 4 PM, we will gather with friends and family at Beech Hill for dinner.

On our honeymoon

David and I are on our honeymoon and having a fantastic time on Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard. It's a great trip and we are enjoying the ocean, biking, and great food. We'll be home soon, but this was a trip that we will remember for a lifetime.

The wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner were a huge success

We had a lovely rehearsal and we all learned where to stand and what to do during the ceremony. Then we all went to Mom & Dad's house for a wonderful evening of wine and food! The champagne was the hit of the night, and everyone loved the Polish food we served. We danced and danced this evening to wonderful music. Marie taught us how to dance, and Stella & Nancy tore up the dance floor. Pat Fabozzi gave a heartfelt speech that caused her to choke up. The speech was WONDERFUL and so kind and flattering to us. Robert was shy and refused to give his toast. Many, including Carol Falkenstein, John Cunningham, Priscilla & Adam Behidj, Clem & Nancy Looby, and the Cunningham's from Seattle, traveled long distances too! What a wonderful time we had! It was a perfect evening! Heavenly! Brilliant!

Joan's dog Rebecca broke her leg today. She's now in a splint. I've begun to call her "Peggy" – short for "peg leg." Poor dear, I hope she feels better soon!
